Comparing the John Deere 5E Series and the Mahindra 5555 Tractors
There are many similarities between the John Deere 5E Family and the Mahindra 5555 utility tractors. If you’re trying to decide which tractor is best for your operation, you might be considering either of these tractors. While either of these tractors will help you get the job done, there are a few things that set John Deere 5E Family tractors apart from the Mahindra 5555 tractor. If you’re not sure which one is best for you, here is a guide to a few of the main differences between the two. We’ll look at three things: performance, ease of use, and cost of operation.
Performance:
When comparing the John Deere 5E Series and the Mahindra 5555 Utility Tractors, the first thing to consider is which one performs better? In order to see which one performs better, let’s look at three elements – transmission, PTO, and Hydralic Capacity.
Transmission: John Deere 5E Series tractors offer two transmission options – a 9F/3R SyncShuttle Transmission or a 12F/12R PowerReverser Transmission. On the other hand, the Mahindra 5555 only offers an 8F/8R SyncroShuttle Transmission.
PTO Engagement: Mahindra tractors only offer manual PTO Engagement, while the John Deere 5E Family offers both manual PTO engagement with the 9×3 and electrohydraulic engagement with the optional 12F/12R PR.
Hydraulic Capacity: The John Deere 5E Family offers a maximum hydraulic flow of 18.2 GPM. The Mahindra 5555 only has 15.1 GPM. That means the 5E delivers 20{fef43dd3ebe491a7a0b77b2f8c85361e365cdac36b5c2305aad1e03c7b03cc05} more flow, which provides faster cycle times, more control during loader work and higher output.
Ease of Use:
When comparing performance between two tractors, another important element is ease of use. You want an intuitive tractor that will help you get the job done quickly, easily and comfortably. After all, you’re probably going to be spending a considerable amount of time on your tractor; you want a tractor that maximizes your comfort. In order to see which tractor is more user-friendly, we’ll look at two things: ease of use and operator comfort.
Ease of Use:
The John Deere 5E has intuitively placed controls that are also color-coded! Orange indicates tractor movement and yellow indicates PTO Operation. Hydraulic levers are also color coded to match the SCV ports at the mid or rear of the tractor. On the other hand, the controls on the Mahindra 5555 are ALL the same color. Another difference is the reverser. On the Mahindra, the left-hand reverser requires the operator to completely extend his or her arm to change directions. On the 5E Family Tractors, the reverser lever can easily be accessed with one finger, while still keeping both hands on the steering wheel.
Operator Comfort: The John Deere 5E Family offers a clean operator platform, whereas the Mahindra 5555 range lever and clutch pedal are placed awkwardly, which makes it hard to get on and off the tractor. 5E tractors also offer operator shielding which protects from debris and keeps heat from the engine directed away from the operator during extremely hot conditions, while Mahindra tractors don’t provide any protection from debris or heat. The 5E Series also features standard cupholders. Mahindra’s 5555 doesn’t offer any sort of beverage placement or storage.
Cost of Operation
Without a doubt, one of the most important things to consider when purchasing a new tractor is the cost. You obviously want to save money and get the most bang for your buck! So which tractor will make your dollar go further? To decide which tractor is a better value, we’ll look 3 things: tractor uptime, fuel economy, and tractor design.
Tractor Uptime:
The John Deere 5E has an intuitive cooling package with the capacity for long days and tough jobs. On the other hand, the Mahindra 5555 doesn’t allow for efficient airflow to the engine. The radiator is blocked by the air filter, headlights AND the battery, which means the Mahindra is more prone to overheating, and must take frequent breaks. The 5E also features an 18 Gallon Fuel Tank, compared to Mahindra’s 17. This means that with the 5E, you’ll spend less time fueling and more time out in the field!
Tractor maintenance is also much more time-consuming on the Mahindra 5555. It’s oil pan is split down the middle of the driveshaft, which means that in order to change the oil, you have to remove two plugs, rather than just one. Also, the battery on the 5555 can only be accessed by removing the hood, front shroud AND side panels. On the other hand, to access the battery on the John Deere 5E, all you have to do is lift the hood.
Fuel Economy:
The John Deere 5E Family offers 540E PTO with the optional 12F/12R PR Transmission. This option saves fuel and reduces wear and tear on the engine. With the 540E PTO, you can save as much as one gallon of diesel per hour. This feature will save you hundreds of dollars per year, compared to the Mahindra 5555.
Tractor Design:
The Mahindra 5555 tractor has a radiator that is blocked by the air filter, headlights, and battery, which doesn’t allow for proper air flow. This means the Mahindra 5555 is prone to overheating. Also, many of the mechanical linkages on the Mahindra 5555 are exposed underneath the tractor and vulnerable to debris and damage. On the other hand, the linkages on the John Deere 5E are intuitively placed to minimize exposure and damage.
